-PENS REPORT'S THE EDITOR'S OPINION: 2013 TRADE DEBATE-By Amy RobinsonIn the past few days the trade rumors around the Pens have swirled. Fans are buzzing that names like Columbus' Jack Johnson and Calgary's Jarome Iginla are certainly headed to Pittsburgh, and all for little cost from the Penguins in return (players like Kennedy or Despres). That's the hype at least, but unfortunately it's not reality.Sad truth is if this was Los Angeles' Johnson, then maybe it'd be worth giving up a future 1 pair D-man in Despres. But it isn't. Far from it. And even though Johnson has underwhelmed recently, Columbus isn’t going to give him up for merely for a player projected to succeed alone. And the Pens aren’t going to offer up numerous players, or any more prime prospects for a struggling D-man who may just add to Pens defensive problems instead of solving them. A guy who's yet to prove he has the ability to soar in the NHL outside of Los Angeles. And who's head seems stuck on the fact he lost out on a Cup with the Kings by that much in 2011/2012. The argument in favor of acquiring Johnson, is that the Pens league-leading defenseman Kris Letang needs a top-caliber, long term partner to pair with. But the fact of the matter, right now, is that the most promising long-term partner for Letang, is just the man who's reporters say the Pens are shopping to trade. Simon Despres and Kris Letang have been awesome together. They've showed a tremendous amount of chemistry in an extremely short period of time. A chemistry that is very rare in the NHL. The kind in which 2 players seem to have a natural connection with each other, not just one manufactured by time. And this enormously promising pairing has all occurred during Despres’ earliest NHL stints, his growing pains period. Imagine just how good that duo could be in just 1-2 years time! But of coarse, Despres has to remain a Penguin for that to happen.Another sad truth in all the trade enthusiasm is the Jarome Iginla situation. The Iginla and Penguins rumors have been around for a few seasons, and have now reached their an all-time high. But the fact is that Iginla has been on a direct and sustained spiral downward in performance for many seasons now. He'll be almost 36 by the time this year's Stanley Cup finals take place. And the statistics alone are clear, Iggy's on his way to retirement very soon. The fact that he's injury-inclined just ensures that all the more. And Iginla just doesn't have the look of a Teemu Selanne or Bill Guerin type, age-defying player. So his worth as a trade target to the Penguins is limited. It hinges upon immediate results, which are so often the opposite product of a major trade. Especially one that sends a player to a team who's culture and chances at succeeding are completely contradictory to his former team. And especially if a player has been with his ex-club for a significant period of time. James Neal serves as very recent and perfect example of this that Pens fans can easily remember. And again the Pens aren't going to give up anything of long-term worth, just to have Iginla as a rental. Nor is Calgary going to let the only good thing about their franchise for the past decade go easy, if at all. And why make that trade anyways? Because of a 3-year-old theory he may play well with Sidney Crosby? Last I checked Kunitz and Dupuis were stellar line-mates for 87. They don't just support Crosby, but are among the fray of top NHL stats leaders in various categories themselves. But neither one has the eye-catching and fan-enticing "star player" name that Jarome Iginla does. Everybody seems to want a headliner just to put on that marquee alongside Sid. Even though his current wingers might be the best players out of any active NHLers for that job. All these rumored moves for the Penguins have the same thought behind them: The newer and bigger "name" player, the better. But I think the best coarse of action for the team actually may be the antithesis of that. And that we could end up seeing the Pens refraining from any big blockbuster deals in 2013. They simply aren't going to have the major James Neal-type trade deals every single season, that just isn't feasible. (Especially for a team so limited by major long-term contracts and with minimal amounts of top prospects.) And the fan's expectations (some could say even requirements) for the Pens to do so at all costs need to be reassessed. Ultimately, we have to choose- is it more important to you that the Pens to lead the NHL headlines in February and April, or in May and June? The answer is obvious. And contrary to major moves, the best medicine for this team could be just aiming to add more quality, depth players before the trade deadline alone. Make some small tweaks, and then fit those select new pieces into the existing wealth of talent that already resides in the home team's locker-room at Consol Energy Center. It may seem too simple for those who favor flashier moves, but no other team in league would bet against this current roster already, so why should we?***** www.pensreport.comPens Report e-mail: pensreport@yahoo.com & On Twitter: @pensreport
Pens Weekly Minor League Report (EVERY WEDNESDAY ON PENSREPORT.COM)
By Andrew Grimm – Columnist, PensReport.com
WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA – The playoff push is right around the corner in both ECHL and AHL, so how do the Pens minor league affiliates stack up? Both the Pens affiliates were in action this past week, in search of vitally important standings points.
The Pens ‘AA’ affiliate, the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers took a southern swing this past week, playing a pair of games in Greenville (the New York Rangers affiliate) with a trip to Gwinnett (Phoenix Coyotes affiliate) in the middle. Last Thursday, Wheeling was only able to beat Greenville Road Warriors net minder Connor Knapp for one goal, and fell 3-1. Friday night in Gwinnett, it was a couple of former Pens prospects that burned the Nailers, as 2007 third round pick Casey Pierro-Zabotel racked up a four point night (1 goal- 3 assists) and former Nailer and Wiles-Barre/Scranton Penguin Joey Haddad had a three point night (1 goal – 2 assists) in a 6-5 come from behind Gwinnett win. Wheeling desperately needed to salvage the trip on Monday afternoon in Greenville, and they did just that, picking up a hard fought 3-2 win in a shootout. Nailers leading point getter Paul Crowder had a goal and two assists on the trip, while Wheeling’s sniper Chris Barton netted three goals and added an assists in the three contests. Both Crowder and Barton have seen time with the Pens AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.
The Pens ‘AAA’ affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL were also in action this past week. Friday night, the Baby Pens ran into a hot goaltender as Igor Bobkov made 32 saves and the Norfolk Admirals (the Anaheim Ducks affiliate) stole a 1-0 win in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Jeff Zatkoff made 11 saves on 12 shots in the loss. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton rebounded on the road in Binghamton Saturday night, pulling out a 5-2 victory of the Senators (Ottawa’s affiliate). Chad Kolarik netted a goal, Trevor Smith netted a pair of goals, and Dylan Reese added a marker as Brad Thiessen stopped 22 of 24 in the win. Another hot goaltender would plague the Baby Pens on Sunday, this time it was Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Riku Helenius who stopped 23 of 23 and shutout the Baby Pens in a 3-0 Syracuse Crunch (Tampa Bay Lightning affiliate) win in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Helenius’ efforts helped him earn AHL player of the week.

-Pens Trade Defenseman Ben Lovejoy To Anaheim- PENS TRADE LOVEJOY-The Penguins have traded defenseman Ben Lovejoy to the Anaheim Ducks in return for a 5th round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. -Lovejoy's career under an NHL contract has been entirely with the Penguins, and he was reared primarily by the Pens organization in the minor leagues. -While Lovejoy was a frequent player on the Penguins roster over the past 2 seasons, he only cracked the line-up in 3 games in 2013 and his unremarkable play led to his duties being taken over by either one of burgeoning players Simon Despres and Robert Bortuzzo. -In tandem with the trade, the Pens have recalled defenseman Dylan Reese from their minor league affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. -Reese will take Lovejoy's roster spot as the Pens reserve 7th defenseman. And he will likely stay in that position until the return of injured regular D-man Matt Niskanen bumps him off the roster. -Reese may be able to make the journey to join the team in time for Thursday's game at home against the Washington Capitals. -And although Dylan Reese is not expected to play vs. the Capitals, serving in his reserve role, he would be able to join his first team practice and pre-game skates with the Pens tomorrow if travel time allows him. -The Pens site official announcement was extremely brief on the news, seen HERE.-The Ducks announcement is also rather short, but HERE.-The Pens' article on Pittsburgh native Dylan Reese can be seen HERE.(-Additional stories on this news can be found below-) -PRESS LINKS--KDKA/CBS Pittsburgh: "Pens Trade Lovejoy, Promote USC Native Dylan Reese."-NBC Sports: "Penguins Trade Defenseman Lovejoy To Ducks."-Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Penguins Shake Up Defense By Trading Lovejoy, Recalling Reese."-Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Pens Trade Lovejoy To Anaheim, Recall Upper St. Clair's Reese."-The Citizen's Voice (Wilkes-Barre, PA): "Pens Deal Lovejoy To Ducks."-TSN: "Duck Acquire D Lovejoy From Penguins In Exchange For Pick."*****
