Hurricanes vs. Penguins Preview: Clash With The Canes

The Penguins try to regain winning form in their series opener with the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes are headed to town Tuesday to face the Penguins with both teams seeking to rebound from recent losses. The Pens want to correct their defeat to the Maple Leafs on Saturday which interrupted a five-game win streak. Carolina won their last outing vs. Calgary, 3-2, but lost the past five games prior to that win. So they're scrambling to find some consistently winning ways again.

This is the first of three games between the Penguins and Hurricanes in the next month. So what happens Tuesday will be a barometer for the next two outings. (And perhaps provide some carryover if things get heated.) The Pens will face the Canes again in a few weeks in Raleigh on December 18th. Then they meet back in the Burgh once more on December 22nd just before the Christmas break. After that, they'll wrap the season series in January in Raleigh.

Penguins Update:

The Pens' penalty kill remains perfect for the seventh-straight game. They have now killed 21 of the last 22 penalties. This is good news ahead of this matchup as Carolina's two goals vs. Calgary in their last game both came on the powerplay.

Tristan Jarry has had a bumpy history against the Canes which is something he’ll look to right on Tuesday. He’s nearly at 3.60 goals against (3.59 GAA) vs. Carolina and has a career-losing record when playing them at 1-3-0.

It appears that Kasperi Kapanen is finally getting another in the Pens lineup after seven games as a healthy scratch. (Seven games in which the Penguins put up a 5-2 record.) Whether this is due to Danton Heinen’s cold streak, an attempt to showcase Kapanen for a trade or a bit of both is up for debate. Kapanen has scored just five goals in his last 62 games played.

Speaking of Kapanen, there is some buzz in multiple cities including Pittsburgh that a change of scenery trade involving Kasperi could be brewing, which might factor into this sudden activation. It's just one aspect to keep in mind as we watch this play out. The Penguins’ patience with him certainly seems to have expired so even though he’s back on the roster, it's unlikely his future remains with them.

Hurricanes Update:

Carolina is still high in the standings but has faced a rough patch of late, dropping five of their last six games. The only win came in their last outing vs. Calgary on Saturday.

The Hurricanes are another team with a pile of injuries to major players which is likely holding them back from their full potential. Although not too far back as they remain just out of the top-10 in the standings Critical forwards Max Pacioretty, Teuvo Teravainen, and Ondrej Kase remain sidelined as does 1B goalie Frederik Anderson.

For The Penguins: Tristan Jarry. Since being pulled against Montreal on November 12th while dealing with some kind of mystery ailment, Jarry has won four straight games. He's also held the opponent to a single goal or less in three of those four games, including during his first shut-out of the season vs. Winnipeg. He's heating up at the moment and appears in better health than in the recent past.

For The Hurricanes: Sebastien Aho. The Canes centerman has six points in the last six games including a three-point outing against Winnipeg. He's currently the second in team points behind Martin Necas as well. Historically Aho has also played well against the Pens, he's got 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 15 career games played vs. Pittsburgh. He's a reliable pick to factor into the action at some point in this game on the Carolina side.
