Pens Pre-Game #13: Penguins vs. Devils- Pens Must Catch The Devils, Stop 3-Game Skid
PENS GAME #13: PENGUINS VS. DEVILS
The Penguins celebrate Hockey Fights Cancer Night tonight at home against the familiar faces of the New Jersey Devils. And while the off-ice festivities will certainly be special, the team is anything but that on-ice of late. The Pens are now officially on their worst losing skid of the season, 0-3. Pittsburgh Penguins (6-3-3) vs. New Jersey Devils (5-5-1) at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA at 7PM (EST) During this recent string of losses the Penguins have looked as rough as the record suggests. They're sluggish, uninspired, and growing worse by the game. Their loss to the Leafs on Saturday was unarguably their worst showing and emotional low-point of the year. They're going to have to get back to basics and find some collective motivation to contend for a win vs. the Devils The Penguins 3 consecutive losses have suddenly dropped their standing in the league. Their overall record is back down to .500, at 6 wins and 6 losses. They've also been regulated to 7th in the Eastern Conference, the general "danger zone" as far as overall "good and bad" team performance positioning. All this info will be weighing on their minds as they face an even more desperate New Jersey team, who don't have much to lose and will surely be pumped to face the Pens. On to the game details....

-The Pens are now at 2 wins and 4 losses at home this year. (Broken down into losses/OT losses, 2W-3L-1OTL.) They've got a major PPG Paints problem. -The Devils conversely have an atrocious road record, at 0-4. So no one has a clear edge in home/away between this pairing. -Derrick Brassard will miss his 4th game tonight due to a lower body injury. He is currently not skating at all, overall either. -Combined with Justin Schultz, who's out long-term due to a broken leg, the Pens 2018-19 man games lost count is now at 14 games. -Juuso Riikola is expected to play on defense tonight instead of Chad Ruhwedel. That switch is not injury related. -Both Evgeni Malkin’s 9-game and Dominik Simon’s 5-game point streaks were ended in Saturday’s loss. -The night was also rough for Sidney Crosby who was the only Pen to come away as a -3. He only had 1 shot on goal and went 39% in the face-off circle in an rare thoroughly bad game. -Pens had 15 credited giveaways in Saturday's game. -Saturday vs. the Leafs was also just the 14th time in Pens history that they were shut-out by at least 5-0 in a regular season home game. -Tonight 2 milestone scenarios are also still up for grabs- Kris Letang is 1 assist from tying Syl Apps for 6th on the Pens' All-Time Assists list at 349. And Matt Murray is 1 shutout from overtaking Johan Hedberg as sole #4 on the Pens' All-Time Shutouts list with 8. PENS P.S. EXTRA MISC. THOUGHTS & INFO *Congrats once again to 2 Pens on reaching major career milestones on Saturday vs. the Leafs, Jack Johnson for playing 800th career NHL game and Carl Hagelin for playing his 500th career NHL games! *Pens & Devils match-up is one of the most relevant on-ice for Hockey Fights Cancer Night among these teams Brian Boyle, Phil Kessel, Olli Maatta, & Mario Lemieux are survivors. *If you would like to make a donation or volunteer your time in honor of Hockey Fights Cancer, please consider giving or working with our chosen cancer charity, the Passavant Hospital Foundation of Pittsburgh.
