Pens Pre-Game #22: Penguins vs. Blue Jackets- A Tale Of 2 Metro Teams

Saturday, November 24, 2018

PENS GAME #22: PENGUINS VS. BLUE JACKETS

The Metro Division's first meet the worst, as the division leading Blue Jackets come to Pittsburgh to face the last place Penguins in another key inter-divisional game.

Pittsburgh Penguins (8-8-5) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (13-7-2) at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA at 7PM (EST)

*Update at 11/24/18, 5:05PM (EST)*

Patric Hornqvist is now confirmed out with a concussion sustained last game vs. Boston.

On and off once again the Penguins are back in the loss column after dropping the game to Boston in OT. They desperately need to find some multi-game consistency soon or face the wrath of the consequences of a team who can't.

Perhaps the jolt of playing the noted rival Blue Jackets will shake them awake?

Those Blue Jackets are 1st in the division and 4th in the Conference, so they won't be push-overs. Columbus is also completely healthy, not missing a single player to injury right now. They're going to test the Penguins.

Those Pens meanwhile still only have 2 wins in the month of November out of 11 games and haven’t won 2 games in a row in almost month, since October 25 & 27. They're at the bottom of the division and one out from the last place in the Conference.

The match-up tonight is really a story of two teams in totally different, opposing positions. Columbus is doing great, Pittsburgh is still spinning out of control.

Here are the specifics...

FINISHING FACTS
FINAL NOTES ON THE GAME

-Pens Roster Moves: Garrett Wilson has been called-up from the AHL, apparently signaling Patric Hornqvist was injured last night vs. Boston and will not play tonight. *Update at 11/24/18, 5:05PM (EST): *Patric Hornqvist is now confirmed out indefinitely with a concussion sustained last game vs. Boston on a hit by Kevan Miller.*

Bryan Rust is likely to take Hornqvist's spot on the top line as he did in-game vs. the Bruins when Hornqvist left to the locker-room. Derek Grant is a game-time decision again due to injury. If he cannot play, Garrett Wilson would take the open spot on the 4th line. Casey DeSmith is also expected to start in net, as it's the 2nd of back-to-back games tonight and the goalie duties are traditionally split in this scenario.

-Milestone Watch: Olli Maatta is still 1 point from 100 career points. While Jake Guentzel is nearing the same 100 career points mark too now, he is 4 points from 100.

-The Penguins swept their season series vs. CBJ last year with 4 wins.
-Pens have won their last 5 straight regular season games vs. Columbus as well, with CBJ's last regular season win over the Pens back in the 2017-16 season.

-The Pens and Jackets went past regulation time in 3 of 4 games and went to shoot-outs in 2 of 4 games played against each other last year.

-The Penguins are 2-10 in their last 12 overall and 5-17 in their last 22 games vs. the Eastern Conference.

-The Blue Jackets are 4-1 in their last 5 games overall and 15-7 in their last 22 games on the road.

-The last time these teams played on 4/5/18 Phil Kessel had a 2-goal and 3-point game.

-The home team has won 10 of the last 13 games played between PIT and CBJ.

-Team injury comparisons: CBJ- 0 Injured players, PIT- 5 Injured players (Cullen, Grant, Hornqvist, Murray, Schultz.)
